Julie Dirksen
A number of myths persist about people’s allegedly ever-shortening attention spans—but what does the science say? Neuroscience, behavioral economics, and consumer psychology all offer insights into how we manage and allocate attention. Additionally, our ability to manage attention and focus seems to be related to our abilities to allocate willpower and influence how we make decisions. In this session, you will learn what the current science says about how attention, willpower, and decision-making interact, and how that influences the design of digital and learning environments. In this session Julie will discuss:

Bonus Breakout Session- Talk to the Elephant: Design for Behavior Change! Julie Dirksen Frequently, learning design is about showing people how to do the right things, but actually getting them to change their behavior can be another story. It’s particularly challenging to get people to change those intractable habits and behaviors that everyone struggles to avoid, despite the wealth of available information about better choices. This session will explore how to design with behavior change in mind. You will examine behavior change from a number of different angles, using techniques from the fields of neuroscience, behavioral economics, behavioral psychology, persuasive technology, user experience, and even game design. Content Knowledge or Deduction Skills: Creating Measurable Assessments Cara North When someone selects the correct answer in an assessment, how do you know if they "know" it? For many learning and development practitioners, writing measurable assessments is something that is not prioritized in their design process. Due to this, often assessments measure deduction skills instead of content knowledge. How do you know if your assessments are effective? In this session, you will explore common test-writing pitfalls for multiple-choice items and scenario items and discover how smart test-takers excel without learning the content.Cara North is an award-winning learning experience leader who has worked in corporate, higher education, and consulting. She is currently the Founder and Chief Learning Consultant at The Learning Camel, an adjunct faculty member at Boise State University in their Organizational Performance Workplace Learning (OPWL) program, and a facilitator for National ATD in their learning technologies certificate program. Cara has served as president of Central Ohio ATD’s Board of Directors, and you can find her sharing her unfiltered learning and development content on LinkedIn, Twitter, and her YouTube channel, Unfiltered ID. |
Making Technical Training Pop! Gayliene Omary Every company has some sort of technical training i.e., computer software, new hire training, machinery training, and even compliance training. Many believe that it must be boring because it is so technical. A learner can say "it is a waste of time". They generally tune out until there is something that is relevant or useful. Like, they know someone is making popcorn, but aren't really interested until they smell it cooking. Untrained or under-trained employees can cost you time and money. You will leave this session inspired to make your own technical training pop, through tested principals, content creation, shaking up current theories and applying it to your trainings, just like making a bowl of popcorn*. Using five tested delivery components for technical training, you will discover how they can be used throughout all the delivery options: Virtual, In-Person, eLearning or using them in combination. Explore design principals that help generate active learning avenues, by applying less design and more activity. Allow the active learning design to seed the knowledge and drive the skills. Evaluate the application of these principals to your technical training and observe the pop. *Not made with peanut oil, for those with allergies. Gayliene Omary has been gleefully employed as a "Trainer" for 8 years. She is currently a Lead Application Instructor with the business writing team at Ice Mortgage Technology, where she facilitates and designs mortgage software training for administrators and end users, writes software workflow guides, as well as policies and procedures for the eStore. Training is truly her passion, making sure the learners "get it" is her joy. She has been awarded a lifetime President's Volunteer Service pin and numerous other awards through Toast Masters International. Gayliene is not afraid to shake things up in the technical training world. She shares that bold innovative spirit and inspires others to shake it up, too. |
Eric Bort Session 1 - Getting on the Write Page: Strategies for Instructional Design Let's look at operational (and creative) efficiencies for instructional design heavy organizations. What’s not working in your organization or L&D department? Does it involve research, subject matter experts, and the inevitable instructional design process of writing a final piece of content? We will dissect (through some question and answer mixed with my experience) the wrong way(s) and how to find out which “right way” of re-implementing an instructional design strategy can form the foundation of an efficient, more creative, and on schedule Learning and Development department. Session 2- Replacing assumptions with agreements: Organizational Growth through the Lens of L&D How Clearly Trained found new growth after 25 years, by implementing an operations management strategy from the ground up. We'll look at the organization's restructuring journey by sharing and asking pointed questions that most avoid, but once confronted and executed on, make wonderful efficiencies happen in the business. We will in particular hit on opportunities in the learning and development department - but the lessons can be applied to anything from a starting agency with two employees to a Fortune 100 size organization. Originally from Avon, Ohio, Eric grew up in the wilds, building forts, setting things on fire, and hitting larger trees with smaller trees to watch things break. Paired with a family ethic of hard labor and fiscal responsibility, this somehow created an adult mentality of ‘I’ll figure it out along the way, I just have to show up and keep trying’ which in general has been a pretty good approach to most things in life. Eric started Clearly Trained in 1998 under the name of ‘Slyabus.com’ which as a (not so) hilarious misspelling of Syllabus was understandably difficult for potential clients to grasp (but as an 18 year old, it was definitely funny). Over the years both the mindset and business grew to a bit of a tipping point where freelancer no longer worked and he started hiring. Things happened, most of it magical, some of it stressful, and over 25 years word of mouth spread, jobs were completed and customer service prioritized. In his spare time, Eric likes to lift weights. He’s targeting a 475lb deadlift and 300lb squat for posterity in 2022. Eric also enjoys learning jazz and lounge piano, nature, and working on himself and his family dynamic. |

![]() Leadership for a New World: Lessons from a Reiki Master Ashley Barnes What if we’ve actually been doing leadership all wrong? In this session, Ashley Barnes will share her unique insights as both a corporate L&D professional AND a “Reiki Master” that can help us A) break free of old models, and B) bring forth holistic approaches to integrate healthier, more impactful and inclusive, and human-centered strategies for growth. For everyone. It’s becoming clearer than ever that modern leadership demands more than the tired, old top-down, productivity-based, corporate paradigm where leaders are “in charge.” It demands more than a focus on force-fitting outward behavior into a prescribed set of skills or competencies that attempt to define success for people. We can do better. And we must do better, which is why we’re here. Ashley Castle Barnes has a passion for helping leaders and organizations develop healthier, more impactful, inclusive, and human-centered strategies for growth. Integrating her unique insights as a corporate learning and development leader, holistic coach, and Reiki Master/Teacher, she believes that leadership is an “inside job”, and as such, she draws on her rich and varied experiences to teach practices that help leaders spark valuable transformations and have a greater impact without depleting themselves in the process.
